It’s official…Jens Voigt will be here in Balingup this weekend for the 2018 Tour of Margaret River! Famous for being one of world’s most tenacious breakaway specialists, and admired for being one of cycling’s most genuine and amiable personalities, we can’t wait for you to meet him!
Jens along with a cavalcade of World Champion cyclists including Annemieke van Vlueten and her EY Pro Cycling team, Robbie McEwen, Emma Pooley and Luke Durbridge will be in Balingup on Friday 9th November for the Stage One start of the Tour of Margaret River Road Cycle Race.
The unique format of the Tour means that amateur cyclists can compete directly against riders from the pro tour peloton. Designed especially for teams, the TOMR is a highly tactical race where competitors are allocated points in a way specific to each stage. Simply put, there is no other race on the world cycling calendar quite like the TOMR. And with over 800 riders forming 120 plus teams, the Tour of Margaret River is one of the largest competitive road cycling events in Australia.
Stage 1 – Friday morning – 9th November, 2018 – THE ARRIVAL – The first stage of the 2018 Tour will depart from the picturesque township of Balingup and wind its way along the river and through the serene Blackwood Valley to eventually deliver riders to Nannup. This 42km Stage will be conducted as a team time trial with results used to classify teams into racing divisions for the rest of The Tour. To catch the action be here by 11am to watch the Breakaway Ride with Jens Voigt. And from 12 noon riders gather to commence the team trial leaving in 2 minute intervals! Throughout the day Balingup will transform into a Cycling Village where you can meet’n greet cycling greats from around the world! A variety of stalls and food vendors will be available, plus all that Balingup has to offer with cafes, shops and curios!
To watch the race start, gather near the Balingup Tavern OR . . . for the best vantage point grab a deck chair and set up a picnic on our verge! You’ll get a perfect view of the teams as they round the first bend out of Balingup!
